One of the most important ways you can battle mindless eating is by practicing self-awareness.
Being mindful is an important tool for developing any new habit. So let’s look at a powerful strategy for mindful eating.
Keeping a Food Journal
Research has repeatedly shown that food journaling is one of the most effective ways to confront mindless eating.
You may think that you eat okay, but it’s hard to know without keeping track.
We recommend all of our patients keep a food journal—at least for a while.
Here are our thoughts on food journaling:
- Self-Awareness Through Practice: Simply recording what you eat will make you more aware of your choices.
- Minimize Effort: You want to minimize the work, so don’t be concerned with tracking calories, macros, micros or other dietary elements.
- How Long Should You Journal? Food tracking is not something you have to do forever, but you should plan to journal for at least a few weeks. You and your coach can decide when to stop.
