Overview:
This module explores ‘Sleep’ as an essential pillar of the Vitality Program. While someone can force themselves to exercise and to eat a given diet, it’s not the same with sleep.
Sleep has enormous effects on our behavior and health and is critical to maintaining a healthy metabolism, not to mention, cognitive health, immune system function, work and personal relationships.
In this module, the provider will learn about the crucial role of sleep in overall health, recognizing signs of sleep deprivation, identifying individual chronotypes, and learning about potential sleep solutions such as sleep tests and cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I).
Topic Summary:
- Lack of restorative sleep can cause chronic stress hormone elevation, contributing to metabolic dysfunction.
- The recommended sleep duration is between seven and nine hours each night.
- Sleep deprivation may be assessed by simple self-assessment questions about morning fatigue, sleep onset, and daytime drowsiness.
- Individual chronotypes (early bird or night owl) can affect daily routines and should ideally be embraced rather than resisted.
- Persistent sleep issues may warrant a comprehensive medical check, as they could signal conditions such as sleep apnea, hormonal disruptions, or other medical issues.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is an effective treatment for sleep problems associated with anxiety, intrusive thoughts, worry, and ruminations.
