Mitochondria are energy powerhouses.

Their job is to convert energy from food into energy your body can use—kind of like a solar cell converting light from the sun into electricity.

If your mitochondria are healthy, you use the right fuel for the right situation; you are metabolically flexible.

However, if your mitochondria get sick—you get sick.

People who are metabolically inflexible have fewer mitochondria—and the ones they have don’t work very well.

What Do Mitochondria Have To Do With Zone 2?

Healthy mitochondria happily burn fat for fuel and only turn to sugar when exercise intensity ramps up significantly.

This allows you to stay in Zone 2 for longer periods and at a higher intensity of exercise.

All exercise is good for your mitochondria, but Zone 2 training is particularly effective for increasing your number of mitochondria as well as improving their function.

Zone 2 training improves metabolic flexibility. That’s why you should focus on Zone 2.
