This is a question that only you can answer. While there are self-assessments and questionnaires available, in a lot of cases it gets back to personal insight.

Understand that in a negative emotional state, your ability to think through problems and make good decisions is suboptimal.

You can ask yourself questions like, “Am I happy?” or “Am I content?” But your ability to gain insights is affected by the emotional difficulties that cause you to ask these questions in the first place.

We recommend keeping it simple. For example, it can be helpful to take a step back and ask yourself the following:

Is my emotional and/or physical symptoms from stress, affecting:

  1. My health (eating, moving, sleep).
  2. My relationships with family, friends, or colleagues (connections).
  3. My ability to perform at work or school.

If the answer is yes to any of these, then we recommend seeking help now.
