Everyone who lives in the modern world has experienced emotional eating, stress eating, boredom eating, and so on.

Why does this happen?

It’s because ultra-processed food activates the there’s-a-famine-coming-next-week survival ruleset that your primitive brain runs on.

If you want to experience this phenomenon yourself, the next time you get a food craving, try to think about your goals—about what you are trying to accomplish in your life, and how eating a bag of Doritos isn’t part of that agenda.

Or if you’ve just eaten a treat, try to reflect on what your brain was thinking about at the time.

We can guarantee it wasn’t one of your goals.

Your thinking brain might be able to access a goal in memory i.e., you can say it out loud, but it’s incredibly hard to access the feeling associated with it.

So, what can you do to prevent your emotions and primitive brain ganging up and taking over?

Fortunately, there are tactics that you can use to get your thinking brain back in charge.
