This idea might seem quaint, or even a bit silly, but using small plates, bowls, cups, and glasses can be surprisingly effective for passively reducing food intake.

How does it work?

It starts with the principle that our brains are prediction machines. We are forever comparing what we expect with what we get.

Was our bonus at work what we wanted? How about that birthday present? Was the latest episode of our favorite show satisfying?

When it comes to food, getting less than we anticipate can create a strong feeling of deprivation—which is not a good feeling.

Using small plates helps to keep the deprivation switch turned off.
